Reflection #1

What is Art?  At first glance this seems like such a simple question.  Simple?  No.  This question is actually giving me a bit of a headache the further I look into it.  I think that no one person can decide what art IS.  Everyone's oppinions are going to differ greatly.  I think that art is anything that someone creates and that someone appreciates.  That person may be one in the same.  If a person creates something and they are the only one that appreciates the beauty or lack of then it is still considered art, at least in their eyes.  I really liked the youtube clip www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZXOL-HUfWM that we watched that talked about "What is art".  The creator of that clip made a lot of good points and talked about how people think that we need to draw a line between what is art and what is not.  At the end where he said "Do we even need to draw a line?"  I do not think that we do need to draw a line because not everyone will ever agree where that line needs to be drawn.  I think art can be beautiful or ugly but who am I to decide what is considered art.
On en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art it says,"Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions." I like this definition except for the fact that sometimes art can be created accidentally.
There is a website that puts two artists against each other like Britney Spears vs. William Shakespeare.  This sounds and is funny.  I personally do not think of Brittney Spears when I think of art but apparently some people do.  This just goes to show just how different people's oppinions of art and artists really are.
On another website that I found, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art it talks about an on air discussion from 2006.  My favorite thing on this website says "What is art?  Anything that someone wants to call art."
I really like this answer and I feel like it really sums up my feelings about what art is.  Art is anything that someone wants to call art.  Wether it be a scribble made by a two year old or a painting made by an elephant or even a urinal signed by an artist.  If someone wants to call it art then let them.  Why do I or anyone else for that matter need to make a decision on what is art and what is not art?
